Is Grass Seed Needed For Your Lawn?

by dwightski on February 19, 2010

There is a trend I have seen lately for lawn treatment and it does not include lawn sprinkler adjustment or grass seed. I have an industrious neighbor, who I watched grass seedswith great interest as he tore out his old worn out patch filled lawn. He brought in some extra help for the dirty work. After they dug up the lawn and removed the almost completely dry sod he ripped out the sprinklers and PVC pipe. Then he raked flat and packed down the dirt with a lawn roller filled with water until he had a nice smooth flat surface.

At that point I had to go over and ask him what he was up to, because we have a really strict code enforced upon us now from our own government about watering our lawns. He smiled and told me I would probably laugh when he told me so I waited patiently as he pontificated to me the money savings and time savings he was about to enjoy by putting in synthetic grass. I almost choked on my drink but managed to hold back the laughter and as I wiped away the tears, I told him I could not believe he would do this to our neighborhood. I told him he was smitten by that commercial that featured one of our local football heroes playing with his kids on the synthetic grass, but He explained in a authoritative manner that I would not be able to tell the difference from across the street once the grass was installed over the next week.

A few days later, the contractors showed up and as they worked they put down some sort of weed or lawn treatment and then placed the everlasting green synthetic grass down and cut it to fit in just a few hours. I had to walk over and touch the newly laid lawn to get a feel for the texture and I have to say it does look and feel pretty nice, almost real. I was thinking I was going to see some sort of indoor/outdoor carpet type stuff that they used to use back in the seventies, but it was completely different then I had first expected.

Synthetic grass has come a long way from when it was first introduced and if you are finding that taking care of your lawn is more than you really want to deal with, then perhaps instead of grass seed, maybe synthetic grass would be a viable alternative when you are thinking about revamping your lawn.

Till next time.
