garden edgingWhen you want to separate your lawn into areas of lush green and then a mix of bedding plants you have a multitude of choices of dividers at your disposal. Garden edging is one part of your lawn that can either make your life wonderful or a hand full.

Lawn edging comes in an array of styles. One popular type is black or brown PVC plastic that gets plunged four inches or so into the ground and has a circular hose looking top that will stop your lawn from spreading into your bedding plants. The best way to put these into the ground is to use a shovel and make a “cut” into the sod and then push the blade end of the garden edging material into the ground. It takes careful work to minimize the damage caused by the shovel, but practice will make your lawn edging line look flawless and keep the grass on one side and your ground cover for your bedding on the other. This type of edging works best if you have contoured garden edging that has curves in them.

Another popular style is four to six inch long wood pieces that are locked together by wire into one foot or eighteen inch long sections that can be inserted piece part along the path. This type is normally hammered in with a mallet into the ground, or a small cut is made with the blade of the shovel into the sod and then the section is placed into the opening and secured by hammering the wood pieces into the cut.

Stepping stones are a wonderful way to create that separation between bedding plants and lawn edging. If your stepping stones are placed with gaps between, they tend to let the grass grow between them leaving a very natural looking transition to your garden edging. If you dare, you can even put a plant stand or garden urns along the bedding plants side of the stepping stones to highlight the walkway with color from plants that you have complete control over without too much fuss.

Garden urns can be a spectacular addition to a corner area or in a pedestal arrangement. Whether they are covered with their caps and set in a corner by themselves or as part of an arrangement where they are open and have vines or flowers popping out of them, they are an affordable way to make your garden unique and have those corners and straight walk way areas covered with fresh plants if you use rocks and other inorganic along your edges.
